2011 Book Tour

Official launch date of The Great Penguin Rescue!, October 26, 2010
On the 10-year anniversary of the Treasure oil spill in South Africa, penguin expert Dyan deNapoli brings readers the compelling story of the largest and most successful rescue of oiled animals ever undertaken. Journey with her to Cape Town as she and a small team of rescue specialists train more than 12,000 inexperienced - yet tremendously dedicated - volunteers how to care for thousands of oiled penguins languishing in an enormous warehouse. Celebrate with rescue workers as the penguins are released onto local beaches after they have been scrubbed clean and rehabilitated. You will be inspired by the indomitable spirit of the penguins and by the compassion of the people who labored for three months to save them. The Great Penguin Rescue reminds readers that each one of us can make a difference.

Monday, May 16th at 9:30 am
Beverly Public Library in Beverly MA - lecture and book signing

Penguin expert and author Dyan deNapoli will be giving a presentation about the rescue of 40,000 penguins from the Treasure oil spill in South Africa. Dyan was a member of the first team of zoo and aquarium professionals to fly to Cape Town to train and supervise 12,500 volunteers who came to save the oiled birds. This presentation will include photographs taken during the rescue effort. Her book about this event, The Great Penguin Rescue, was selected as a Silver Award Winner in the 2011 Nautilus Book Awards, a 'Must-Read' book in the 2011 Massachusetts Book Awards, and was named one of the 'Best sci-tech books of 2010' by Library Journal. The Daily Beast has said of her book, "It’s hard to imagine a silver lining coming out of a story about an oil spill, but if there ever were one, it would be The Great Penguin Rescue." The author will have signed books available for purchase following her presentation. This talk is free and open to the public. The Beverly Public Library is located at 32 Essex Street in Beverly, MA.
